Expert: Crucifixion caused pulmonary embolism, not fatal blood loss

I'm not christian, but i betcha this will piss a few christian people off....

JERUSALEM - An Israeli researcher has challenged the popular belief that Jesus died of blood loss on the cross, saying he probably succumbed to a sometimes fatal disorder now associated with long-haul air travel.

Professor Benjamin Brenner wrote in The Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis that Jesus’ death, traditionally believed to have occurred 3 to 6 hours after crucifixion began, was probably caused by a blood clot that reached his lungs.

Such pulmonary embolisms, leading to sudden death, can stem from immobilization, multiple trauma and dehydration, said Brenner, a researcher at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

“This fits well with Jesus’ condition and actually was in all likelihood the major cause of death by crucifixion,” he wrote in the article, based on religious and medical texts.

A 1986 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association mentioned the possibility that Jesus suffered a blood clot but concluded that he died of blood loss.

But Brenner said research into blood coagulation had made significant strides over the past two decades.

He said recent medical research has linked immobility among passengers on lengthy air flights to deep vein thrombosis, popularly known as “economy-class syndrome” in which potentially fatal blood clots can develop, usually in the lower legs.

Brenner noted that before crucifixion, Jesus underwent scourging, but the researcher concluded that “the amount of blood loss by itself” would not have killed him.

He said that Jesus, as a Jew from what is now northern Israel, may have been particular at risk to a fatal blood clot.

Thrombophilia, a rare condition in which blood has an increased tendency to clot, is common to natives of the Galilee, the researcher wrote.

I think point of researching what Jesus died of is kinda a waste of time, but I'm sure there are people that would want to know. Sure it will stir up some controversy. Sure it will make a few head lines, but at the end of the day, isn't WHAT HE DIED FOR really what matters?

Soon they'll be researching if Adam and Eve had a belly botton or not. Heh...

" Sure it will stir up some controversy. "

That's the part I don't get. When the newspaper says someone was strangled to death, should we get angry because a coroner calls it asphyxia?

Whether this is true or not, Jesus died as a result of his ordeal. He was scourged, crucified, stabbed through the ribs with a spear (o'destiny). I don't think it matters whether one or all killed him, or whether the resulting blood loss or a blood clot killed him.

There's way too many people with wacko theories about Jesus out there to be annoyed about this.

I read somewhere that death by crucifixtion is caused by the body become to weak and colasped to bring itself to breathe, so they die because of suffocation. Not that it really matters.

There's a number of actual causes of death that could result from the experience of crucifixion, and the events leading up to the crucifixion.

I agree, it does not matter HOW Jesus died, and if anyone were able to determine for sure a cause of death, it would not have any impact on anyone's belief or disbelief of Jesus as savior or prophet or historical figure. It would simply be an interesting bit of trivia.

I have great respect for most religions, ironically least of all is catholism, namely cause of the inquisition, and other incidents...but oh well.....

That's ok.  I wont hold it against you.

I have always wondered about that.

I really don't see how you think this would somehow anger anyone. Besides, it just a theory. Lacking a body to examine, it's physically impossible to say definitively how someone died. It seems that whether he died of blood loss or some other mortal failure really doesn't make much difference.

So its kinda like a Wicca/Spiritual combination (kinda,maybe?)...at least thats what i got from it...i'm probably totally off...oh and i apologize LW if i angered you... (BTW, i'm gonna be gone for 2-3 weeks starting this next monday ,so don't get to far in this topic then...(Moving to Tuscon so i can get settled before i start my new career)

Yeah, let's see them research something really interesting..

I didn't either, until I went to work and it was the topic of debate between fellow co-workers.

I couldn't agree more.

No. Did you even read the link I provided?

--I did,but thats what i reasoned...it was early in the morning for me...so (4am)

Ahh, thanks...i got it now...

Then all I can suggest is that you work on developing your reading comprehension skills. Wicca was mentioned only once in that article, in the following context

I suggest the following site for Chaos Magick info. It must be emphasized that this is centered on the Left Hand Path, which is the orientation I would assume Little Whip adhered to. Of course, I could be wrong.
