THE 4TH OF JULY

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men

who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,

and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;

another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or

hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,

and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large

plantation owners; men of means, well educated,

but they signed the Declaration of Independence

knowing full well that the penalty would be death if

they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw

his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold

his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British

that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.

He served in the Congress without pay, and his family

was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,

and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall,

Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and

Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that

the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson

home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General

George Washington to open fire. The home was

destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.

The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few

months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was

dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and

his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he

lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife

dead and his children vanished. Some of us take these

liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July

holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to

ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free!

I hope you will show your support by sending this to as

many people as you can, please. It's time we get the word

out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has

more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

and what is sad is the modern congress would feel they were being deprived if they could not have a coffee break and lunch while debating the shit out of every niggling point/

This statement is quite misleading as phrased. Nine signers died during the course of the Revolutionary War, but none of them died from wounds or hardships inflicted on them by the British


--Now if they fought against the british, in that they strived to make america free from the binds of the crown, then wouldn't they have received wounds from the british crown...i mean, they didn't exactly shoot/stab themselves...right?(also, not all wounds are physical right? Franklin received an emotional wound/blow when his son sided with the crown...)

I consider snopes.com to be an exceedingly reliable, but not infallible, reference source. I have a bit of a pet peeve about forwards (I get a lot of them) that are alarmist or inaccurate (even if only mildly so), and I can't keep myself from directing the person sharing them to the correct information (often in the form of a snopes link).

Forgive me; I certainly didn't intend to diminish the spirit of what you've posted...I just wanted to alert you and other readers to some details that needed to be clarified. I'm not very versed in history, so I won't debate your assertions in response to the snopes link.

Just thought the "debunking" of bits of the forward were worth a look.

--Ehh, no problem...no one is hurt right? thanks for doing that...I may not be a Professor of history, but i avidly read about it...(got a 15' tall by 6' wide bookshelf filled with books concerning history...also, am not a Dr. but i do have a Masters...its fine if you think i'm full of S**t concerning that comment...and really don't want to get started in another..."educational references" "debate"....

--Its not a lie...people want me to "reveal my true self", yet they are not willing to believe me...granted, my record isn't that great...but its about faith/trust...faith/trust in I am working on getting to where i won't lie...i am seeking help, i go to the doc's twice a week, *shakes head*, wasn't trying to wow you...not many people here seem to think i am competant enough to do anything...others have claimed some sort of "favored status" and have been able to "prove" it...no one has challenged them (as far as i know)i honestly think that the reason that no one will, or does, believe me, is based on that first incident, period...

I can accept you just fine for who you are...
